Patricia Sample

Patricia Olcen Sample (nee Toombs) August 29, 1938 to April 20, 2023.  Born in Winnipeg  to Esther and Jack (JHE) Toombs, and raised in Calgary Pat studied music through the Royal Conservatory of Music obtaining her ARCT in both organ and piano.  She studied French and Law at the universities of Laval and Alberta.  Pat went on to post graduate studies in Paris, France.  Pat was a long standing member of the Law Societies of Alberta and of Upper Canada and she practiced law in Ottawa and in Toronto.  Pat married her husband Bob, a Member of the RCMP, in 1966.  They moved to Toronto, met wonderful friends and made a life together with their two children.  In 1978 Bob was transferred back to Ottawa and they bought a farm on Jock Trail outside of Richmond Ontario. Pat taught piano and theory to hundreds of students over the years in Toronto, the Munster area and Almonte. Pat’s Anglican faith was strong. She was a member of the Christ Church Ashton congregation and she played the organ for services for many years.

After losing Bob to cancer in 2008, Pat stayed on the farm and kept busy and happy though her knitting, puzzles, gardening, church activities, exercise classes, visits with family and friends and time spent with her grandkids. Pat loved animals, both domestic and wild, and she loved her sports.  In particular, she was an avid fan of the Sens and the Jays. Pat will be missed by her children Elizabeth Steele (James), Robert Sample (Julie); her four grandchildren Hannah and Olivia Steele and Jack and Allison Sample; her extended family and many friends across Canada.  Special thanks go to Pat’s wonderful medical and personal caregivers including those at the Richmond Medical Clinic, the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, Valley Stream retirement residence, the Home and Community Care Support Services Champlain and Hospice Support Volunteers.  Interment will take place in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity of your choice.
