Michael “One-Speed” Bennett
P.Eng. Carleton University
It is with deepest sorrow and devastating pain that Richard and Rebecca (Rick and Becky) announce the sudden and too-soon passing of our beloved son, Michael Richard Lee Bennett. He was the devoted, loving and proud father of Tyler and Kiley, much cherished brother of Brent (Lisa), and the adoring, fun-loving “Uncle Bike” of Darren and Fiona. The entire family is truly heartbroken over the loss of such a kind soul, taken from his family and friends that loved him sincerely and completely. He will also be greatly missed by his many aunts, uncles and cousins, from Victoria to Halifax, and in the Ottawa area.
When he wasn’t spending time with family, Mike was a dedicated all-season cyclist on the trails, mountains and roads. He competed in many cycling races over the years, including multiple 24-hour events and the TransRockies Race. Mike was also a talented action-sports photographer. His friendly smile and literally “down to earth” positions to get the greatest shots will be missed by the many competitors at local and area races, from triathlons, to mud races and Army Runs. Mike had a special way of preserving a moment in time, capturing the raw emotion and exertion of each athlete with his own artistic and edgy style. He also taught us that life is a gift so you should always do what you love. Save a ride in the sky for us. We love you!
Mike was a dedicated long-term employee of Harris Utilities SmartWorks and a former Nortel employee.
A celebration of Mike’s life and tributes will take place at Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, on Saturday, January 21st, from 2:00-4:00 pm, with brief tributes to Mike beginning at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Mike’s memory, please consider donations to the Ottawa Mountain Bike Association (OMBA), whose members fund and volunteers build and maintain the trails he so much loved to ride. https://www.ottawamba.org/en/mike-one-speed-bennett for information on making a donation.
