William. J. "Bill" Francis passed away peacefully in Ottawa on the 12th of July 2014 at the age of 78. Native of Ottawa, born in the family home on Gladstone Avenue, Bill was the youngest son of the late "H.G." (Hilliard) and Vivian (Carkner) Francis. Married his beloved Gail Aldus in May of 1956. He became the loving father of their five children; Brent (Lucia), Darrell (Erin), Janet (Angus MacDonald) Matthew and Daniel (Ronalda). Survived by his nine loving grandchildren; Ben, Alex, Graham, Hilliard, Alastair, Laura, Christine, Billy and Selina. Also surviving Bill is his sister Doris Rose (late Ivan), brother Reginald (Lyn) predeceased by his brother Hugh (late Lois). Dear brother in law of Dave Aldus (Eleanor) Peterborough. Bill began working with his father H.G. Francis in 1953, selling and servicing home comfort products, eventually taking over the business and growing it to become one of the largest independent firms in the petroleum, heating and air conditioning industry in Canada. Over the years, Bill achieved his various Trade Licenses; Sheetmetal, Plumbing, Gas & Oil Heating. He was awarded a Life Member of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI) of Canada and the 1994 Nepean's Businessman of the Year Award. In the nineties he added a truck dealership and service centre to complete his businesses Freightliner-Sterling and Western Star of Ottawa. An active member of many executive committees, Bill was a founding member of Canadian Oil Heat Association (COHA), Past President of Ottawa Oil Heat Association (OOHA), Past President Kinsmen Club of Ottawa (1969-70), member of the Kiwanis Club of South Ottawa, Past Chairman Ottawa Better Business Bureau (1984), founding member of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise Ottawa (CAFÉ), member and previous Deacon of Bethany Baptist Church, and Ontario Commissioner of Oaths. Bill has been an active member of Sir Guy Carleton Branch of United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada, Ottawa Shriners Prince of Wales Lodge #371. Bill enjoyed his many years as a member of the Ottawa Hunt Golf and Curling Club and his adventures as a multi-engine licensed pilot. The family will receive friends at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Baseline Rd and Bayshore Dr.) on Monday, July 14th, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, July 15th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Bethany Baptist Church, 382 Centrepointe Dr, Ottawa on Wednesday, July 16th at 10:30 a.m. Interment Pinecrest Cemetery. Donations to the Kidney Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
