Vera Inge Grolle passed away peacefully in her sleep at Extendicare New Orchard Lodge in Ottawa on May 22. Beloved wife of the late E Hendrik Grolle. Dear mother and exceptional mother-in-law of Kaj (Jean), Frank (Paula) and Gitta; Grandmother (Farmor) to Gregory (Jennifer), Alex (Tori), Karsten (Brittany) and Kieran (Emily); Great-Grandmother (still Farmor) to Teagan, Declan, Everett and Sophia.
Vera grew up in Helsingor, Denmark near Hamlet’s castle Kronborg, met her husband (our father) as a volunteer after the war and emigrated to Canada in 1953. After almost 50 years, having made many close friendships in Regina, they moved to Ottawa in 2000. They found a home on the Ottawa River that reminded her of her childhood Helsingor. She later moved to a retirement home, enjoying the social atmosphere immensely, monitoring the entrance lobby continuously with her 2 very special friends Shirley and Audrey.
She spent her last year, in the exceptional care of the staff at Extendicare New Orchard Lodge. She sincerely appreciatedtheir attention and the hustle and bustle in the corridor outside her room. Family had video chats with mom daily and found her to be happy, healthy and comfortable.
A young Vera was a brilliant student, accomplished in six languages. She never attempted anything in half-measure and developed and shared skills in pottery, porcelain dolls and cross-stitching. She loved to cook for family and would make you an “honorary Dane” if you could pronounce her signature dessert“Rodgrod med Flode”. Christmas cookies, elaborate birthday cakes and wonderful meals were appreciated immensely.
Mom always had a special place for her daughter Gitta, who continues her mother’s ability to make anyone smile.
In her later years, mom developed Alzheimer’s. Although something no one wishes to experience, she bore the weight of itbravely and surprisingly, in the past year, it may have protected her from suffering the isolation imposed by COVID.
Vera was totally devoted to her family and will forever be in our hearts.
In light of COVID, the family will postpone the funeral until restrictions are relaxed.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to your charity of choice would be appreciated.
