On Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Born in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. Son of Ford and Minerva Kaulbach, deceased. Also predeceased by his siblings Earle, Jean, Don, Leo and Ted. Survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley (nee Brown) and cherished children and grandchildren - Katherine and her son Mauricio , Charlottetown; Andrew, Ottawa and his daughter, Naomie, Laval as well as sisters-in-law, Kay and Marion of Nova Scotia and special brother-in-law and his wife, Richard and Karen Brown, Burlington. Plus many nieces and nephews. Educated at Acadia University where he also excelled in sports, especially track and field. Thurston joined The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada upon graduation and later became a member of The Royal Canadian Regiment. He had tours in Base Gagetown (4), Cyprus, Kingston, Germany (3) and Ottawa. He was so proud to command 2RCR from 1979-81. Upon retirement from the regular force he became Executive Director of The Dominion of Canada Rifle Association -a post he held for ten years. Full retirement saw him take up golf and curling (City View). He and Shirley were fortunate to travel extensively, often with friends, and to spend winters in Florida and summers at the family cottage in New Brunswick. They liked nothing better, wherever they were, than to have friends and family around their table. Thurston was involved in military organizations in Ottawa including NATO Vets. He and Shirley were active members of Christ Church Bells Corners, The Dinner Dance Club of Ottawa as well as enjoying the NAC, Ottawa Little Theatre and Kanata Theatre. An officer and a gentleman, deeply loved.
A memorial visitation will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean, on Friday, December 6th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Bells Corners on Saturday, December 7th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers donations to Christ Church Bells Corners or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
