Burton, Tannis
Tannis left this world peacefully on the evening of June 29, 2015, at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa, after fighting a devastating but brave battle with brain cancer. Born 1959, in Montreal, Tannis studied accounting at Carleton University. She went on to work for many years at Revenue Canada, until a debilitating illness prevented her from continuing to work. Smart, funny, strong and independent, she was first and foremost a loving and devoted mother and daughter. She was also a talented seamstress, cake decorator and knitter, who enjoyed popular music, reading, the Ottawa Senators, and independent learning in science, math and business. Tannis will be greatly missed by her daughter and best friend Sara Hickman, mother Marion (nee Coleman), sisters Laurie and Bonnie, brother Brian, brothers-in-law Ken Graham and Malcolm Barr, nieces Boston and Delaney, nephews Colton and Eden, and dear friend Val Richards in Florida. She was predeceased by her father Allan in 1988 and her older brother Marshall in 2013. In keeping with Tannis' wishes, a small private family gathering will be held. A heartfelt thank you to those at the Civic and General Hospital campuses, and at the Palliative Care Unit at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, who cared so compassionately for Tannis, and showed such kindness and support to her family. As an expression of sympathy, in memorium donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family.
