Susan Richards

Susan Christine Richards, 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 in Ottawa, Ontario. She was born on November 10, 1944 in Manchester, England, to Peter and Edna Denton. In 1964, Susan married John David Richards and in 1966, they set off for a new life together in Canada. They first lived in Montreal before later settling in Ottawa, where they raised their two children, Jan and Mary Jane. Susan is also survived by her sister Marjorie Kilbey and her much-treasured grandchildren, Calvin, Michael and Emily. Susan initially trained as a typist, but her love of books and reading soon led her to pursue a new direction. While raising her family, she began working at the Nepean Public Library and later the Ottawa Public Library. She returned to school as a mature student, attending Algonquin College to become a Library Technician and then Carleton University to earn a Bachelor Degree in English. A lifelong learner, Susan had a boundless enthusiasm for literature, local theatre, historical reenactment, languages and academia.  Susan was also an avid bicyclist, enjoying trips around the Ottawa Valley and as far afield as the Netherlands. The family would like to thank the staff at the Wildpine Residence in Stittsville for the engaging, inclusive and enriched environment which Susan enjoyed to its fullest for the last few years of her life, as well as the doctors and nurses at the Ottawa General Hospital for their compassion and care in Susan’s final days. Family and friends are invited to visit at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd. (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.) on Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service int the chapel at 11 a.m.  Memorial donations may be made in Susan’s name to Parkinson Canada and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
