Howarth - Susan (née Graham)

It is with deep sadness and a great sense of loss that we announce the passing of Susan (Sue) Howarth on August 12, 2015, after almost 10 years of battling breast cancer. Devoted wife and partner to her husband of 44 years, Scott. Mother, mentor and inspiration to her daughter, Stephanie Howarth (Michael Johnson), and to her son Ross. Mourned by her sister, Brenda Graham (Michael Jalland); her nieces Caroline Jalland (Kevin Scragg), Andrea Jalland (Brian Chetwynd); and her mother Joan Graham. She will also be missed by her brother-in-law, Jon Howarth, (Denise) and her nephew, Erik (Raouia Howarth) and her niece, Lysianne (Jason McNeely). Born in England, Sue immigrated to Canada in 1957 and was raised in Guelph, Ontario. As an adult, she spent 17 years as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the E.C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton, Ontario before moving to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for nine years with her young family. In Yellowknife, she co-founded a shadow puppet group, giving performances for community children and finally producing a CBC TV film on a native folk hero, Yamozha. She then co-founded the NWT Chapter of Kids on the Block, which travelled throughout the Territories, under sponsorship by the territorial government. In 1991, the family moved to Ottawa, Ontario, where Sue re-entered her teaching profession for deaf and hard of hearing children for both the Ottawa Public and Ottawa Catholic School Boards for the next 19 years before retiring in 2010. Sue will be sorrowfully missed by her family and many friends. Friends may attend a visitation at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean on Thursday, August 20th from 1:30 pm until time of memorial service in the chapel at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Maplesoft Centre for Cancer Survivorship Care or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
