1940-2020

Peacefully in hospital surrounded by family on Friday, January 3, 2020.  Cherished wife of 57 years to Ivan Porter.  Loving mother of Kate Porter and Susan Porter McEwen (Cameron McDermaid).  Proud grandma of Faelan McEwen.  Fondly remembered by her siblings Gordon McEwen (Phyllis), John McEwen (Joanna), Mary Ellen Langlois (Marc), Daniel McEwen, and Marjorie McEwen (Peter McPherson), as well as her siblings-in-law Su Porter and Doug Watson, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Sonja was predeceased by her parents George McEwen and Dorothy (Fothergill McEwen) Fairbank, nieces Christine Langlois and Ellen McEwen, parents-in-law Esmond (Red) and Carmen Porter, and siblings-in-law Clayton Porter and Carmen Watson.

Sonja was born in Chapleau, ON and in childhood her family moved around with her Dad’s teaching career. Eventually, they settled in Sudbury. She found her calling in nursing, graduating from Marymount School of Nursing in 1962. A blind date brought Sonja and Ivan together and in 1963 they were married. After their children Kate and Susan were born, the family spent some happy years in North Bay and Belleville before beginning a new adventure in Ottawa. Here, Sonja pursued further studies and work in cardiac nursing during the early years of The Heart Institute. In retirement, Sonja and Ivan moved to the Ottawa Valley, enjoying the quiet of small town Stewartville and a treed yard where Sonja’s beloved dog Honey could run and play. First and foremost, Sonja loved her family. She enjoyed music and dancing, baking, cooking, and crafting of all kinds. She had an especially green thumb with her African violets. Sonja relished a good book, lively debates and conversation, and was an avid follower of current events. We remember her irrepressible sense of humour, her love of laughter, and her smile.
