Shirley Maheral

April 1, 1948 — April 2, 2018

GAY (Maheral), Shirley Elizabeth

RN

Shirley passed away peacefully, on Monday April 2, 2018, at the age of 70. Beloved wife and best friend of the late Christopher Gay. Dear Mother of Andrea Elizabeth (Shane Farley) and Peter Matheson. Cherished Nana of James and Victoria Foottit. Loving Godmother of Kristina Maheral. Daughter of the late Elwood Thomas Maheral and Mary Inez Maheral. Sister to Allan, Bruce (Rachel), Ken (Suzanne), Glen (Aline), Wayne (Patricia) and Connie (Claude Graziadei). Daughter-in-law to the late Aubrey Matheson Gay and Helen Louise Roberta (Emmerson). Dear sister-in-law of Melissa Tsangaris (Andreas). Proud Aunt to her many adored nieces and nephews. Puppy parent to Susie the beagle.

Born in Shawville, Quebec, Shirley spent more than 45 years as a nurse - a job to which she brought endless passion and dedication. With her family as her North Star, she lived and worked across the country and forged many close relationships along the way. Settling down in the Ottawa area, Shirley rose to the top of her career, and spent years improving patients' lives at The Ottawa Hospital as a Clinical Director of Nursing. In her retirement when she wasn't spending time with her friends and family, she was a volunteer for Victoria's Quilts Canada and the Canadian Nurses Association.

Everyone who knew Shirley, loved her. Her smile, the sparkle in her eyes and her upbeat personality were inescapable. She was a fierce friend who would stop at nothing to help someone in need. And as a mother, a nana, a sister and a daughter, there was no one like her. Her love was a warm light that cradled those close to her. Shirley will be greatly missed.
