MacPherson - Shirley
Helen Shirley MacPherson (née Hull) passed away peacefully on November 11, 2017. Shirley was born in Woodstock, NB on February 24, 1922 to Grover and May (Morrison) Hull. She grew up in Glace Bay, N.S. and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Glace Bay General Hospital in 1944. She joined the army in April 1945 as a nursing sister, and served at various camps in Nova Scotia and Quebec. After her military service she attended the University of Toronto before moving to Ottawa, where she met the love of her life. She and Bill were married November 11, 1950. She moved often over the next two decades due to Bill's military career, and found time to raise two children as well as pursue her nursing career, finishing up at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. After living in Dartmouth, NS, for twenty years, Bill and Shirley moved to the Ottawa area in 1990 to be closer to their children, and settled in Osgoode where they quickly became part of the community as members of St. James United Church and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #589. Shirley's family and friends will recall her love for painting and music. Shirley was stricken with Alzheimer's disease and struggled valiantly for many years. She was a resident of the Kemptville Hospital Interim Long Term Care ward until she found a home at the Osgoode Care Centre in 2013.
She is survived by her husband, Bill, and two children, Elizabeth and Stuart (Denise). She is also survived by her grandchildren Gary (Mindy) and Patti, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, and her three siblings Alvin, Lloyd, and Esther. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Osgoode Care Centre who took such wonderful care of her during her time with them.
