ARENDS, Shirley Ann,
An Officer and Director of Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited (CBN) died on Sunday January 21st, 2018 after a long illness. Born in Preston, England, Shirley immigrated to Canada in 1972 where she commenced work with Mitchell, Plummer & Co. in Toronto. That same year, Doug Arends joined Mitchell, Plummer and thus began a collaboration in life and business that led them both to Ottawa and the acquisition of CBN. They worked many long days to build CBN from a small security printing house to a multinational corporation that today is one of Ottawa's largest high technology employers.
Shirley had a zest for life and a love of the outdoors. A member of Bigwin Island Golf Club and a member and past Director of The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, she was an accomplished golfer. She and Doug spent many years turning their hideaway at Lake of Bays in Muskoka into a magical retreat. Shirley loved to sing and indulged that pleasure as a member of the Canadian Showtime Chorus and Voices in Harmony. She loved art and was an accomplished artist in her own right.
Shirley was almost as devoted to her cats as she was to Doug and was a strong supporter of the Ottawa Humane Society.
Her husband Doug, her sister Virginia (Ginny) Aitken of Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, her nieces Lynne and Clare and her nephews Ian and John are brokenhearted, as are Doug's brothers and sisters and their families, her many devoted friends and her extended "CBN" family.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held in May. Details will be announced at a later date.
