Robert Malcolm Hiltz, 71, resident of Ottawa, ON, passed away on October 17th, 2020, following a valiant battle with cancer.
Mac was born on January 10th, 1949 and was adopted shortly thereafter by Robert and Hilda Hiltz in Toronto, ON. He spent his childhood in various Southern Ontario communities where his father ministered and his mother was a schoolteacher. After attending university in Ottawa and then Windsor, Mac went on to have an accomplished and lengthy career as a social worker advocating for children. Mac held multiple jobs in the field before settling in Kapuskasing in 1986, where he became the Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Society for over 20 years. He spent the final three years of his career as the Director of the Kapuskasing & District Association for Community Living. After retiring in 2009, Mac relocated to Ottawa to pursue his greatest passion, caring for and spoiling his five granddaughters. He also volunteered for multiple social service and adult developmental organizations, with the decade he spent volunteering at the Roger Neilson House being his proudest accomplishment. His dedication to children as well as those in less fortunate and vulnerable positions was a constant throughout his life and many were touched by Mac’s generosity, kindness and compassion.
Mac is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Hilda Hiltz. He is survived by his two children, Jason (Myra) Hiltz-Laforge and Philippe Hiltz-Laforge; and his five granddaughters, Justine, Stella, Stéphanie, Valérie and Elsa.
The family asks that donations be made in memory of Mac to the Roger Neilson House. While you are writing the cheque, please play a little Fleetwood Mac in the background, brew yourself a green tea or watch an old Blue Jays game. That’s what Mac would have wanted.
