FREDERICK (RICK) STEPHEN THOMAS
1949 - 2019
On June 11, 2019, loving husband of Margaret (née Forbes), beloved father of Shelley Colenbrander (David) and Karen Thomas (Garnet Fox), adoring Papa to Margot Colenbrander, passed suddenly in his sleep and far too soon. He is also survived by his ‘Ottawa family’, David and Mary Keys, their daughters Christina (Kelsey) and Alexandra (Shawn), Susan and Terry Otto, and Stephen and Deborah O’Connor. He will also be missed by Margaret’s family in Montreal, Mary Tedd and Neil and Sylvia Forbes and their families.
Born in London, Ontario to Frederick (Fred) and Marion Thomas, brother to Shirley Marsh, Phil Thomas and David Thomas. Rick was the first in his family to attend university, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (Honours) from University of Western Ontario in 1974. After graduating, Rick joined the federal government where he served for 31 years and, more notably, met his lifelong best friends Dave Keys and Stephen O’Connor. He started his career in the Science Procurement Branch at Supply and Services Canada , moving to Treasury Board and finally Industry Canada where he rose to the position of Director General. Following his distinguished career in public service, Rick retired in 2005 and went on to consult on many projects with Tactix, including the successful bid of Airbus’ fixed-wing search and rescue planes in 2016.
Rick’s sense of humour was palpable. Despite claims he was an introvert, he could never resist recounting stories to his family and friends – usually about how he had been wronged in some way – always leaving everyone in stitches. A lifelong car enthusiast, cycler of the Gatineau’s, music connoisseur, wine super-taster, political debater and photographer, Rick’s passions were vast and only surpassed by his love and devotion for his family.
