Bex Stewart
Born August 12, 1980
Suddenly and tragically lost to her family on March 9th, 2021. Beloved daughter, sister and grandchild to Lee, Sandra, Kathleen (partner Michael), Grandma Lucy and Grandma Lenore. Many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Stewart, Poaps, LeMay and Weiler families miss our outspoken Bex.
A bright and creative child, Bex loved art, mathematics, synchronised swimming and camping at the Stewart/Poaps family farm. A student at Hilson Avenue Public School, J.H. Putman Public School and Lisgar Collegiate, her favourite teachers: June Rushworth, John Leroy and Brian McKay. Swimming at the national level in synchronised swimming meant Bex trained daily and traveled across Canada to compete with team mates who became good friends. A lifeguard at Brewer Pool and Britannia Beach, Bex loved taking part in mock disasters with their teams.
Bex moved to Toronto after high school to pursue the art of tattooing and body piercing and wore their own body art with pride. Back in Ottawa, Bex worked in various restaurants and at Carleton University as a cook. Training as a heavy equipment operator led to jobs in snow clearance and property maintenance work where a back injury and COVID19 intervened.
A passionate animal lover, Bex loved dog Oliver, cat Aiofe, two hamsters PB&J, and a tank of tropical fish. Passion for animal welfare also led to a long stint as a vegan and lectures to friends and family on the benefits of being a vegan.
Bex loved gaming and Star Wars and enjoyed annual marathons of the movies on May 4. Bex also loved Lord of the Rings and shared that with Sandy. Bex was a big fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race too. Learning Korean online became a COVID lockdown pleasure.
A family trip to Scotland in 2013 created great family memories and prompted a big love for all things Scots for Bex and they had a St. Andrew’s cross on display in their apartment.
Tim Horton’s dark roast coffee with lots of cream and sugar was a favourite. Raise one in Bex’s memory. Donations in Bex’ name to the Humane Society would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
