Phyllis Salter

October 31, 1923 — May 8, 2017

Our mom, Phyllis Mae (nee Salter) Schinzel passed away peacefully at the Empress Retirement Home, Kanata, Ontario on May 8, 2017 in her 94 th year. We are saddened to have lost such a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Born in Westville, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Wilfred and Irene (nee Skerry) Salter, Union Centre, Pictou County, Nova Scotia - the 3 rd eldest of 14 children. She was predeceased by her husband Robert "Bob" Schinzel in 1998. She was proud of her Nova Scotia roots and of her Military Service from 1939-1945. She had been employed by R.L. Crane Ltd. And later at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. She is survived by her 3 sons, Wayne (Karen), Garry (Pat) and Kelvin (Lori); grandchildren Cody, Jennifer (Manuel Mizzi), Ashley (Patrick Mullin), Kelly (Matt Guild), Brittney (Steve Hember); daughter in law Debbie Schinzel and great granddaughters Fiona and Blaire Mullin. Also survived by brothers, Ron (Myrna) Union Centre, Nova Scotia, Garnett (Bonnie) Sussex, New Brunswick, Henry (Joanne) Riverton, Nova Scotia; sisters Violet Hughes (Peter Dawson) Westville, Nova Scotia and Helen Robinson (John) Scotsburn, Nova Scotia and brother-in law Lloyd Hughes New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by sisters Doris, Treva, Rose, Hazel and Joyce and brothers Charles "Bud" Vernon and Allison. With respecting her wishes, a private family visitation will be held at Tubman Funeral Homes Garden Chapel with interment to follow at Highland Park Cemetery, Carp, Ontario. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Special thanks to all nurses and staff at the Empress Retirement Home in Kanata for providing excellent care in her final years. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choice.
