July 16, 1929 – August 8, 2022

Peacefully in her sleep at Hazeldean Gardens on Monday August 8, 2022. Dearly loved mother of Jane Chwedchuk.  Cherished grandmother of Ryan Chwedchuk.  Predeceased by her parents John (1973) and Doris Thomas (1997), her brother James (Jim) (1991) and her husband Christopher Eyres (1996).

Phyllis was born in Ilfracombe, England and studied midwifery.  Already having travelled to Persia (Iran) to train local women in the practice, Phyllis planned to go to Australia by working with the R.C.A.F. in Canada.  Ironically, she met her husband, Chris, on an R.C.A.F. plane going to England on a visit home and never did make it to Australia.  Although they later separated, they remained on good terms and kept in contact until his death.  As a single mother, Phyllis worked at the Montfort Hospital as a registered nurse in obstetrics for about 30 years until her retirement. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandson whenever she could, walking the dog and chatting with friends and neighbours.

Phyllis will be remembered for her kindness, sense of humor and always putting other’s needs ahead of her own. Her smiling face will be missed by all who knew her.

Her family would like to thank the staff and PSW’s for their care and support over the last year and a half while Phyllis lived at Hazeldean Gardens.  A private service and cremation will take place.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis’ memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Ottawa Humane Society or a charity of your choice.  Tributes, condolences, and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com
