December 10, 1929 — March 3, 2017

Phoebe Winnifred Sim (nee Hoan)

Passed away suddenly on Friday, March 3, 2017, during her 88th year. She was the daughter of Ing Sue Hoan and Irene Hoan. Survived by her husband, Donald Clayton Sim, sister Susanne Dong (late Harry) and brother Bob Hoan. Pre-deceased by sister Mildred (Alan) Chin and brothers Tom Hoan and Harold Lee (late Clay). Cherished mother of: Gregory (Margo), Douglas (May), Nancy Gleason (John) and Stuart. Grandmother to : Lauren, Scott and Brett Sim; Naomi Phoebe, Hannah and Eric Sim; Michelle, David, Calvin and Grant Gleason. Born in Hamilton, Ontario she attended Hamilton Westdale Collegiate and earned her Registered Nurse designation in 1954 from Toronto General Hospital. Phoebe and Donald married in Hamilton on June 25, 1955 and began their 61 year marriage in Ottawa. After the youngest of their 4 children reached 12 years old, Phoebe decided to continue her formal education and obtained her Public Health Nurse Certification and B.Sc (Nursing) degree from the University of Ottawa. Phoebe became the on-site plant nurse for over 20 years at Kanata's Atomic Energy of Canada, radio chemical division (now known as Nordion). After spending 60 years in Ottawa, she and Donald moved to Oakville for her last couple of years and resided at Chartwell Oakville Retirement Residence where many new friendships flourished from her personality. Phoebe was a born guidance counsellor; both in her professional career and to her 4 children and 10 grandchildren who truly adored her. Phoebe was the classic extrovert; she could pick up a conversation with strangers with ease, was a great listener and was so empathetic towards others. She also enjoyed dogs, needle work, painting, tennis and during her later years, she loved to garden. Phoebe had a passion for interior decorating particularly for her own home. She loved to dance and was part of the dancing team (Purple Hearts) at the University of Western Ontario and became the dancing queen at Chartwell Residence . We will miss your ready wit, tact, wisdom, generosity and gentle warmth.
