With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Philip Szell on August 18, 2024, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He is now resting peacefully, reunited with his beloved parents, Elizabeth "Mumsie" Philips and Josef Szell. Born on October 22, 1954, in Swansea, Wales, Philip moved to Canada as a child, where his family settled in Ottawa, the city that became his cherished lifelong home.
Philip was a man of many passions and talents. A master electrician by trade, he proudly owned and operated Accel Electric, where he was known as one of the best electricians in the city for over 50 years. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his craft made him a well-respected figure in the community.
While his professional achievements were notable, Philip's true joy in life came from his vibrant personal passions. He was an avid skier, speed boating enthusiast, and a lover of cars and drag racing. Philip found solace in the arts, often channeling his creativity into painting, music, and cooking. His love for the outdoors was palpable, as he cherished every moment camping and spending time at the cottage, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Above all, Philip was a devoted and loving father. He cherished time spent with his three children: Christian Szell, Pamela Szell (Moody Shwales), and Patrick Szell (Shaina Gabriel). He is also survived by his fiancée, Carolyn Cloutier; his three sisters, Marit Wise (the late Stan Wise), Julia Foders (Robert Foders), and Diane Tracey (Tibor Futo); his nephew, Matthew Tracey (Natasha Tracey), his great-nephew, Ryan Tracey; and mother of his children, Louise Jolicoeur.
Philip’s warmth, humor, and easy-going nature left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Whether playing practical jokes or enjoying the serenity of the countryside, Philip lived life with a joyous spirit. He loved to laugh, spend time boating on the Rideau River, and spend winters skiing every chance he got. His travels often took him to the Dominican Republic, where he delighted in lounging on the beach.
Philip’s legacy is one of kindness, love for the arts and music, and deep appreciation for family. He will be remembered for his love of a good party, a cool beer in the summer, and the serenity he found in sunsets.
A memorial reception will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd) on Saturday, August 31st, 2024, from 11 a.m. -2 p.m., with words of remembrance beginning at noon.
