Pauline Paterson

d. July 10, 2013

Pauline died at home, in Stittsville, Ontario on July 10, of breast cancer metastasis. She was born in 1933 in Northern Saskatchewan to Ondrej and Wilhelmina Kovachik. She and the family later settled in Wyoming, Ontario. Pauline was an active member of the Baptist Young People’s Union at Wyoming Baptist Church. She went to Teacher’s College, and returned to a one room schoolhouse where she claimed students learned despite her teaching efforts. She went on to McMaster University for her B.A. and a certificate in Christian Education. She worked at Queen Street Baptist Church in St. Catharines and for the Canadian Council of Churches in Toronto. She married David, and they moved to Montreal where Pauline became an active member of First Baptist Church. Pauline studied and taught at both Concordia and McGill universities when her children grew older. She felt blessed working with, and was instrumental in establishing, a certificate program at Concordia for First Nations community workers. She is also remembered for the creative birthday parties she arranged for her children. After retiring to London, Ontario, where she was active in Westview Baptist and Siloam United churches, Pauline had a recurrence of breast cancer. She and her husband decided to move to Ottawa to be closer to their children. Her loves of learning and of family have been passed on to all who knew her. Pauline is survived by her husband of 49 years, David; their three children – Susan (John), Lisa (Dave), and David A. (Jennifer); five grandchildren Henry, Alex, Ryan, Rachel and Hudson; siblings Bessie (Laverne), Millie (the late Bill), Richard (Penny), brother-in-law George (Carole); her nieces and nephews, and their families. She is predeceased by her parents, sister Anne (the late Irv) and niece Linda (Rai). Instead of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either the London Health Sciences Foundation (www.lhsf.ca) or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (http://ohfoundation.ca/) indicating that the donation is for cancer research. A celebration of Pauline's life is being planned for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3, at Stittsville United Church, led by Rev. Grant Dillenbeck. The church is at 6255 Fernbank Road, Stittsville, Ontario. The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the previous evening at the Garden Chapel, Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa
