Orville Com.

June 21, 1934 — November 18, 2015

Orville Joseph Lahey, 81, died in Ottawa following a long battle with congestive heart illness. He will be sadly missed by his long-time companion Margot, son David (Patty Stamler) ,daughter Cheryl, (Mike Paju); son Patrick (Kelly McEvoy),grandchildren Kelly-Anne, Curtis, Ryan, Jennifer, Graham, Brianna, Sydney , Michaela, sisters Norma (deceased), Lois, Loanna, and brother Stuart. His wife Shirley predeceased Orville in 1984. Born and raised in Ottawa, the son of Clifford and Stella, he was a lifelong resident of Ottawa having attended St Patrick's College and Ottawa University where he earned his Bachelor of Commerce which was followed by graduate studies at the University of Toronto. In his early years, Orville grew up in Sandy Hill and was a member of the Beaver Boxing Club and a frequent attendee at the Standish Hall. Later he earned a gold medal debating at Ottawa University before he started his business career at Shell Oil. After serving as a Regional Manager with Shell Oil, Mr. Lahey was recruited to be the General Manager for Hall Fuels and grew the business into an acquisition target by Imperial Oil. Senior executives at Imperial Oil saw promise in this Ottawa leader and brought him to Toronto where Orville quickly moved up the ranks to the executive suite. Orville next caught the entrepreneurial bug and was convinced to found a start up Canadian Division for Danline Brushes Ltd., a successful manufacturing plant in Almonte, Ontario. Later he added in the Zamboni SMI brand for Canada to his group and later sold the company to retire to teaching business studies at Algonquin College. His life was enriched only when the organizations he ran or the people he taught did well. Orville was well known for challenging others to be their best every day. Mr. Lahey had the courage to lead with compassion, enjoying the most from each and every day. For years, he was known for quietly assisting others in business and non-profit pursuits. To this end, he has donated most of his estate to 3 charities which support opportunities for the underprivileged. Orville travelled extensively and when he had time, enjoyed golf as a 41 year member of Rivermead Golf Club. Other interests included America Management Association, Ottawa University Alumni Association and many hours of volunteer work for the Nepean Minor Hockey Association.
