Matthews, Obie

Passed away on Sunday, January 29 th, 2017, at his home in the Bridlewood Trails Retirement Residence in Kanata, Ontario at the age of 86. Obie was born and raised in Halifax, NS. He was predeceased by his wife, Dodie (née Nicks), his parents Albert Matthews and Hilda Jane Foote of Burgeo and Red Island, Newfoundland, and his younger brother Doug. Obie and Dodie were married in 1953 in Halifax, and raised their three children, Phil (Sue), Lynn (Leigh) and Susan in Halifax, Calgary, Washington, and Ottawa. Obie was a devoted grandfather to two grandsons, Cory (Tanya) and Greg (Marie-Andrée) and was a very special GG to great-grandchildren, Ava and Chase. Obie will be sadly missed by all of his in-laws, nieces and nephews, and surviving cousins, as well as his best friend of 73 years, Donald Palmer. Obie began his career at the Dockyard in Halifax at age 17 and worked for the Federal Government for 43 years, finally retiring in 1993 as the Vice President of the Canadian Commercial Corporation. Obie was a past President and Senator of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (the Jaycees), and was the skip of his curling team in Ottawa. Obie made many friends while residing at the Red Oak Retirement Residence where he enjoyed weekly poker games and excursions to the casino, carrying on the family tradition he and Dodie established of always breaking even. The family would like to say a special thank you to the management and care staff at Bridlewood Trails who were so kind and helpful and who took such wonderful care of our father over the past six months, especially during his final days. Cremation has taken place.
