GREEN, Norman Francis
Passed away on July 15, 2014, in Ottawa, at age 95. Predeceased by his wife Edith (Ovens), he is survived by his children Pat, Shirley and David, grandchildren Adam, Heather, Jesse and Lucas, and by great-grandchildren Megan, Kyle, Jax and Henrik. Norm was born of parents Mary (Keogh) and John Green, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he grew up with his brother Harry. Norm really enjoyed choral and operatic music. He was a founding member and player in the Musical Comedy Guild of Sault Ste. Marie, and spent many years in the St. Luke’s Cathedral Choir. He also enjoyed all things mechanical, especially engines and vehicles. An airplane mechanic in the Second World War and a bushplane mechanic in Northern Ontario, Norm ran a car service station, sold and serviced heavy equipment such as emergency diesel generators used in schools and hospitals, and could be seen riding around town on his motorcycle on warm summer evenings. In later years his lifelong interest in these things inspired him to found the Grey Knights motorcycle club and contribute much of his time as one of the founders of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in the Sault. Interestingly, he had a fascination with numbers and accounting, and found himself acting as Treasurer for many of his endeavours. All of this left him with a number of stories that he liked to tell and write. Although we have heard them all a few times, it would be nice to be able to hear just one more.
