Vachon, Muriel

1923-2021

Muriel Gladys Vachon (Jordan) passed away at home on June 4, 2021, in Carp, Ontario, at the age of 98. Mum was born in London, England, on March 22, 1923, to Robert and Ellen (Grove) Jordan. Mum enrolled in the British Army with the Auxiliary Territorial Services after her brother Len was taken prisoner of war during WW II. Mum was a War Bride, having met her husband, Leo Sr., a Canadian soldier while he was on leave in London. In April 1945, she took a ship to Canada with her one year old son Robert, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. From there she took a train to North Bay, Ontario, to meet her new extended family. The Vachon's greeted her with kindness, but didn't speak English and Mum couldn't speak French, but together they managed well. Mum was a brave, kind, caring and hardworking woman, who loved her family fiercely and unconditionally. Mum was predeceased by her husband Leo Vachon Sr., sons Robert and Keith (Jeannie) Vachon, son-in-law Wayne Sharkey; brothers Bob (Gladys), England, Len (Gladys), New Zealand, Peter (Em), Australia, and Frank in England; sisters, all in England, Doris Shepherd (Terry), Win Worker (John), and Elsie Alexander (George): brother-in-law Wallace Vachon, sisters-in-law Noella Laporte (Joe) and Vie Mahon (Angus). Muriel is survived by her brother Ken (June) in Australia, her son's Leo Jr. (Val) and Russel (Ann), and daughter Eva Sharkey (Ted Lister); grandchildren Samantha, Jennifer, Rusty, Brent, Donna, Debbie and Sherri, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mum was a special Aunt to Julia Worker in England, and many nieces and nephews in Canada, England, Australia and New Zealand. Mum will be greatly missed by all. The family is planning a Celebration of Life in the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Brest Cancer Society of Canada.
