It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Morris M. Kertzer on September 1, 2024, at the Montfort Hospital, Ottawa, in his 94th year.
One of Canada’s most prestigious lawyers, Morris was a graduate of the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta.
Called to the Bar at the age of 24 he was, at the time, one of Canada’s youngest graduating lawyers.
Morris was an expert in the areas of Civil Litigation and Construction Law. He spent most of his career in private practice in Ottawa and subsequently joined one of Canada’s largest law firms, Lang Michener, as in-house counsel.
Kertzer prided himself on being influential in the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. He was involved in numerous major decisions affecting national policy and law and was present during the heated decision regarding the design of Canada’s national flag.
Morris generously represented charitable causes he believed in and freely gave of his time and experience whenever needed. A colleague summed him up perfectly: “He was a smart, feisty lawyer with a big heart.” He will be sorely missed, both professionally and personally.
Morris is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Anita and daughters Deedee (Deidre), Gael and Sharon Grace of Ottawa and his sisters Phyllis Zelcer and Ruby Fruitman (Mel) of Toronto, Ontario. Morris (Morry) is fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and dear lifelong friends.
