Millicent McLaren

August 14, 1929 — August 15, 2023

Millicent McLaren passed away peacefully at Ottawa,ON on 15 August 2023 at the age of 94 years.

She was born on the 14 August 1929 in Bay Roberts, NL to Fredrick (Fred) and Gertrude Peach.   Millicent had one sibling, an older brother, James.

Millicent attended elementary school and junior high in Bay Roberts and completed her high school education in St. John’s.

She continued her education at Memorial College (now Memorial University) in St. John’s and then attended Acadia University in Wolfville, NS

Millicent taught school for a short period of time at McPherson Academy in St. John’s, NL.  Her working career primarily was with the Federal Government where she was employed for 35 years.  She worked with Transport Canada (Air Division) in Gander, NL; Halifax, NS and then in Ottawa, ON.

It was while in Ottawa that she met Clarence McLaren, married and settled in to make Ottawa and Metcalfe her home for over 50 years.

Millicent enjoyed many outdoor activities, she liked to swim, downhill ski and really enjoyed skating on the Rideau Canal.

Millicent and Clarence spent much of their time in Metcalfe, where their country home was located. Here they enjoyed entertaining friends and enjoyed spending time maintaining the property and their gardens.  They grew both flowers and vegetables and certainly enjoyed, all year long, eating the vegetables they grew. Millicent made the best zucchini chocolate cake, perhaps one of the best ways to get your vegetables!

Millicent was active in many organizations such as Beta Sigma Phi and the Horticultural Society where she often won ribbons for her preserves.

Millicent was a person of faith and really enjoyed the fellowship she experienced at Dominion Chalmers and Britannia United Church.
