Gladwin, Mary Winifred
(nee Oxberry)
1931-2021
Peacefully, at Garden Terrace Kanata on Sunday March 14, 2021. Known to family as Win, or Winnie to some, she was in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late John W Gladwin; loving mother to David (Robin) and Chris (Kulwanik); grandmother to Benet (Kim), Paige (Matt), Erin, Finn, Megan, and Abby. Win was the only sister to Ronnie (Thom), Tommy, and Robert (Oxberry); aunt to Jane and Mary-Ellen (Steve). The family wishes to thank the many caregivers and psw’s at Garden Terrace LTC and Chartwell’s Kanata before that.
Born in Cornwall Ontario, Win and family returned to Newcastle, England where they stayed during the WW2, returning to Canada in 1948 at age 17. Eventually she met and married John in Toronto and, following the birth of their boys, they moved to Ottawa area, which quickly became home.
She had many dear lifelong friends and was much loved by her family to whom she was always fiercely loyal, often gentle, and occasionally stern. She will be missed.
An avid spinner and dyer, cross-stitch, and needlepoint lover, many of her works live on. In later years, Win could always be found in the garden, which she tended with care.
Over the last number of years she braved the losses associated with Dementia with grace, dignity, and wry humour. While certain memories vanished, she was able to remember many school girl rhymes and ditties to the amusement of family and staff alike. As Win would say, “Every little bit helps said the lady who peed in the sea”.
Due to COVID restrictions, a remembrances get together will be held in the future for friends and family. The family asks that those who wish to do so, can make a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada, or their charity of choice.
