Malloy, Mary Whitlam
(nee Cruise)
1920-2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Whitlam (Cruise) Malloy. A centurion extraordinaire and an icon of style, she lived a long and wonderful life with us and passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday November 9th. Mary, the devoted wife of her soul mate Group Captain Dennis Graland ‘Bud’ Malloy DFC, loving mother and role model in grace and elegance to Brian & Helen, Barbara & Pete, Virginia & Ted, and David & Valerie, proud grandmother to Laurie, Erin, Ashley, Heather, Connor, Gaelan, Bronwen, and Brigid, and delighted great grandmother to Greyland, Jonathon, Madison, Nora,
Declan, Ophelia, Finnigan, and Bruno. Mary unfailingly brought an elegant strength, steadiness, and calmness to the family. She lived an incredibly full life with Bud as they together navigated his military career through WWII and over 32 postings in 30 years in the RCAF. At each location she was quick to make a house into a warm and comfortable home. Without complaint she kept us fed, happy, and together. As part of these many postings, golf and curling became central to their efforts to meet new friends and drew naturally on Mary’s athleticism – something rarely seen in women of her generation. It was actually playing tennis in Presqu'ile Point by the Cruise family cottage on Lake Ontario that brought Mary and Bud together in a classic love story of a beautiful young woman and daring fighter pilot falling madly in love at first sight – a love that would only deepen over the next five decades of adventure and joy. These two romantics were a very social couple who loved to entertain (Mary especially loved their time in Washington DC) the many friends they shared through the air force and golf – they laughed so much together and brought joy to so many. Mary leaves behind a wonderful legacy of strong women and men who were blessed to be part of this woman’s amazing and beautiful life - a life so very well lived. Our collective challenge is to live our lives with poise, strength, and purpose as she did and maybe a little rebelliousness on the side. Mary you are so loved.
