Mary Johns

November 6, 1927 — March 15, 2017

Mary C. Simpson

Born November 6, 1927, Mary passed away March 15, 2017 following a brief illness. Predeceased by her husband John, she will be much missed by her extended family and many friends. Beloved mother of Catherine (Keith Lay) and Ann (Mark Riley). A lifelong resident of Ottawa, Mary was the only child of Dorothy and C.K. Johns. She attended Hopewell Avenue Public School, Glebe Collegiate and Queen’s University before working at the Bank of Canada. She met John while playing badminton; they married on March 21, 1953, and their shared enthusiasm for tennis, skiing and bridge contributed to many happy memories over the next 62 years. Mary had boundless energy, and was constantly adding to her large circle of friends. She was a generous and loyal friend and an avid traveller, and enjoyed art, museums and classical music concerts at the NAC. Mary was also involved in a variety of volunteer work with the IODE, High Horizons, the May Court Hospice and numerous other charitable organizations, and was always ready to help out. There will be a private interment. Mary always enjoyed a good party, and at her request a drop-in reception to celebrate her life will be held at the Rideau Tennis Club, 1 Donald Street , on Wednesday April 19, 2017 from 2 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Care Ottawa or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Many thanks to the compassionate staff of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus and the May Court Hospice who cared for her in her final days. Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com .
