November 4, 2020, Martha Leslie Elizabeth Clark, at the age of 78, passed away peacefully in the company of family.
Always loved and never to be forgotten by her husband Dr. Gerald Cavallaro, their children Kate (Jon) and Michael (Gillian), grandson Lucas and her dear friend, Lucas’ great, great aunt Rosalie. Loving sister to her brothers Richard, Scott, Peter, and John (while she may not have been the oldest, she was definitely in charge). Cherished cousin; and aunt to her nephews and nieces.
Born at the Civic hospital to Cecil and Gertrude "Dutch" Clark (Young), beloved daughter Martha was a west end kid, attending Nepean High School and Carleton University. While she loved to travel, she also had many local adventures, skiing the slopes of Camp Fortune and exploring the Ottawa-Gatineau region from the family cottage in Sand Bay, QC. You could always stop in for a chat at the pink cottage, where Martha could be found enjoying the tranquil days and cool nights, reading a good book, and only occasionally having to deal with the aftermath of unauthorized parties hosted on the premises. She loved Sand Bay and was an active member of that community, serving at different times in each of the executive positions of the Sand Bay Association.
Before settling down, she spent a memorable three years living, working and attending theatre in London, England, and exploring Europe—soaking up the culture and skiing in the Alps. Eventually she returned to Ottawa for a long career as departmental administrator for various departments in Carleton University and school administrator at CU’s School of Public Policy and Administration, where she took on responsibility to edit “How Ottawa Spends”.
A long-time fan of anything political, she stayed current with three newspapers and was happy to engage friends and family in lively debate. She loved playing bridge, enjoyed good food and wine and had a deep passion for life. But most of all, she loved to read: a book (or eight) and a Kindle were never far away. Generous and caring, Martha encouraged and supported those around her to achieve their dreams. She was an amazing woman who touched everyone she met with her warmth and compassion. She will be dearly missed.
Thanks to those medical staff who cared for her at the Queensway Carleton and Civic Hospitals, and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
