Surrounded by her children, she passed peacefully at the age of 84 years on Monday April 22nd at the Ottawa Heart Institute.

Loving wife of Cornel for 53 years. Devoted mother of Andrew and Marta Jr. Proud grandmother of Amelie, Simon, Nathan, Colin and Megan.

Marta was born in Oradea, Romania, 20 kms from the Hungarian border on May 17, 1939. Youngest daughter of Imre and Johanna Basa, both Hungarian. Pre-deceased by husband Cornel, oldest half-brother Tibor and older sister Hajnal.

She became a lawyer in Oradea and worked at a large clothes factory. In 1967 she got married to Cornel Fekete. Two years later in 1969 they had their son Andras and 22 months later their daughter Marta. They all lived and grew up in the original family home where Imre operated a butcher shop.

In 1981 Marta and Cornel left Romania with only two suit cases, leaving house and family behind. Being a communist dictatorship, they could not take their kids with them. They had to go into an immigration camp in Athens, Greece where they could apply as immigrants to Canada. Two years later their two children were finally let out of Romania and joined them in Windsor Ontario.

With both of them working they were eventually able to buy their first house in Cambridge in 1995.

Unfortunately both Marta and Cornel had battles with cancer, Marta breast and Cornel skin, after which they both retired and decided to move closer to Marta in Vancouver since they loved nature and the mountains. They did end up settling in Maple Ridge, BC and getting a nice house there where they enjoyed living, going for walks and hikes. Marta had a beautiful garden in the backyard.

They enjoyed life in BC travelling frequently, sometimes with their kids.

In the beginning of 2023 her kids finally convinced her to sell her condo and move to Ottawa so she could be at least close to one of her kids.

She lived at the Bradley Retirement home once she moved to Ottawa and got to enjoy some time with family.

Visitation will be held at Tubman Funeral Homes, Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean (between Bayshore and Baseline Road)  on Friday April 26 from 6 pm to 8pm. Friends and family may visit.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
