Marlene Hall

October 28, 1938 — August 28, 2020

Marlene Hall (Higginson) passed away peacefully with her family by her side.  She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Mabel Higginson whom she loved and adored.  Her declining health seemed long to those who loved her, but she maintained her sweet spirit and gentle, loving nature to the very end.  She was loved by her family, friends, and caregivers who now rejoice that she is free and reunited with her Lord and loved ones.

Marlene was born on October 28, 1938 in Regina, SK.  She completed her education in Regina, graduating from Scott Collegiate.  During her high school days, Marlene sang with the Scott Centennial Swing Choir.  They travelled throughout Canada and the U.S.A.  She was an active member of Cameron Memorial Baptist Church and married there in 1961.

Following their marriage, Doug and Marlene moved to Winnipeg, MN. for several years.  Marlene taught school while her husband entered the University of Manitoba, earning a degree in Interior Design.  They were blessed with two children while in Winnipeg, Glenn Stuart and Alison Deanne.  Eventually the family moved to Ottawa, ON. where their third child, Megan Elizabeth was born.  Marlene continued teaching for many years, specializing in English as a Second Language.  She gave this up for a banking career with Scotia Bank in Ottawa, retiring at age 65.

Marlene had a full and rewarding life that revolved around her church and family.  Christ Church Bells Corners became a significant part of her life.  She happily served with her ladies group  "The Firebells” for years.  Marlene enjoyed a gratifying life making cherished memories while living with her daughter Megan, son-in-law Wade and granddaughter Matelynn (Mattie) for many years.   She spent countless contented and active gardening weekends with her brother Lyall, sister-in-law Heather, and their children Jason and Andrea at their cottage.  Marlene cherished the yearly Thanksgiving feast at the cottage with the whole family. She enjoyed many happy days on the beaches with Glenn, Leanne, Rebecca and Scott and many other family members not only in Florida, but also in the Carolinas.  After the death of her Mother, Marlene took up residence in Clearwater, FL. in the same park as her brother Barry and sister-in-law Rene.  They spent their time walking the beach in the sunshine, dinners out, shopping and a movie now and then.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, son Glenn (Leanne), daughters Alison (Hall), Megan (Wade),  grandchildren Erin Elizabeth, Aidan John Quinn (Harvey), Rebecca Marlene, Matelynn Elizabeth (Wright), Scott William Lyall (Hall), sister Donna (Herron), brothers Barry (Rene), Lyall (Heather) Higginson and several devoted nieces and nephews; Cheryl Kelderman, Brenda Latta, Kimberly Stewart, Bradley Higginson, Leslie Marlene Milligan, Jason and Andrea Higginson.

The following is an excerpt of a poem written by Kathleen O’Shea, a lay minister of Moms’ Church written to her mother, Mabel, on her 93rd birthday.  It so aptly describes our Mother:

"You lived your life with zest, Caring for others and doing your best To live out your faith and put it in action   Stressing the caring, love and compassion."

The family thanks the Civic Hospital Staff of A3 and the amazing team at Thornclifffe Place for their loving care of our Mother.
