Kniewasser, Jacqueline
Jacqueline Kniewasser passed away peacefully in her 90th year. Born in Hull, Québec November 13th, 1926, she is predeceased by her husband of 62 years Andrew and her siblings Mark and Nicole. Jacqueline is survived by her three sons and one daughter all born in different countries - Peter (Nancy) in Ottawa, Canada, David (Astrid) in Beirut, Lebanon, John (Mike) in Caracas, Venezuela and Andrea in Paris, France and by five grand-children: Alexandra, Maximillian, Paul, Lauren and Julia and one great grandchild Lucius.
Jacqueline had an adventurous life starting with teenage activities including stories about a snow ski jump in the summer and then building a family which took her all over the world. She met the love of her life Andrew at the bottom of a ski hill at Camp Fortune after a bad fall where she was rescued by this handsome young man. This was to be the beginning of a love affair that would see the couple representing Canada in the Foreign Service and living all over the world while raising a family that included a succession of Siamese cats, and dogs.
Creative, sophisticated and complex, Jacqueline was in every sense a modern woman. She was proud of her French Canadian and Acadian background and stayed close to her roots in the Magdalen Islands. This was a place she loved very much and which she and Andy visited frequently through the decades.
Jacqueline's taste was legendary, for example, homes were seemingly easily made beautiful. Complex novels, art and music were always important to her and she regularly would challenge her children, even as adults, with her taste for avant-garde film and writing. Jacqueline was also a mesmerizing cook; she simply was one of those people who could make everything delicious and do so by instinct. She taught us how to be adventurous in our cooking. She leaves us with fantastic recipes such as for paella, osso bucco, bouillabaisse, and an appreciation for the magic of garlic and olive oil. None of which we will ever make as well as her.
Jacqueline was an artist in every sense and we are fortunate that she leaves behind an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings in various media with works being donated to various charities and private collections with inspiration taken from Rodin and support from her husband of so many years. Jacqueline studied drawing and painting at Ottawa and Hull Technical Schools, BFA University of Ottawa, classes at the Atelier de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris, School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, three Schools of Art -Central Technical School Toronto. Jacqueline joined the SSC Sculptor's Society of Canada in 1991. Her favourite material to work with was stone; she also worked with clay, wax and bronze. Feel free to take a look at some of her work at http://jacquelinekniewasser.com/Gallery.html.
Jacqueline will live on through her art which, like her, is evocative, complex and beautiful.
Jacqueline's passing brings to a close the incredible adventure that started with two young lovers in their early twenties traveling the world together in the Foreign Service representing Canada with style and grace.
Many thanks to Dr. Louise Coulombe and to nurses and volunteers at Maycourt Hospice for the loving care Jacqueline received in her final days. Donations may be made to the Hospice at Maycourt in Jacqueline's memory. A private family memorial service and interment beside Andrew will be held at a later date.
