Margaret Parkin

May 17, 1924 — June 3, 2015

Peacefully, in Stittsville on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the age of 91 years. Beloved wife of the late Walter Thurgood (Ret'd Ford Motor Company). Margaret was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England on May 17, 1924 to parents Percy Laver Parkin and Florence Helena Carr. She has 4 sisters – Brenda who resides in York, England and Phyllis, Dorothy, Kathleen who predeceased her. She also leaves her daughters Janet Buck (Don) of Hamilton, and Lesley Anderson (Brian) of Stittsville, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. In WW2 she joined the WWAF when she was 17 and married Walter on June 12, 1945 in Lincolnshire, England. They were married 64 years before he passed away in July 2009. Margaret, her husband and her eldest daughter Janet emigrated from England to Canada on the "Seven Seas" in 1955, where they lived first in Hamilton and then settled in Burlington. She loved gardening, playing Scrabble and enjoyed travelling back to England, Italy and California to visit family and friends. During her later years, Margaret lovingly enjoyed her large family in Ottawa and stayed active by attending the Learning in Retirement program at Carleton University and the theatre. She had a great sense of humour and was always interested in current events having many a discussion about politics, religion and life. She was everybody's "Nana" and has many friends and family who will dearly miss her. At her request there will be no service, with cremation having taken place. For those wishing to, a donation to the Royal Botanical Gardens (www.rbg.ca/donateonline) for a memorial bench in Margaret's memory, would be appreciated
