Lisa “Betty” Marie Cameron (nee Guénard)
1925-2021
Passed away peacefully at the Almonte General Hospital on Sunday, May 9th, 2021 at the age of 96. Predeceased by her loving husband Robert Cameron and dear grandson Peter. Loving mother of Mark (Marlene), Deane (Elaine) and Deborah (John). Cherished grandmother of Peter, Emily, Robynn, Jesse, Mitchell, Kaitlin and Patrick.
Born in St-Fabien-de-Panet, QC, her family relocated to a homestead in Northern Ontario when Lisa was a young child. She grew up in the Sudbury area and was on her own at the age of 16. Equipped with her secretarial training she left Sudbury for work in Quebec City, Ottawa and eventually Montreal for Dow Jones (Wall Street Journal) where she met a rookie journalist, Robert Cameron, whom she later married.
Lisa was a very selfless person — she put everyone’s interests before her own. She had a creative side and would dive into projects like rug hooking, knitting and sewing, often creating her own designs and patterns — definitely not a paint-by-numbers kind of person. A lifelong learner, she was always reading a book, often many on the go at the same time, and especially enjoyed books about history. She loved roaming the aisles of the local library and bringing home a stack of books. Her home in Pointe Claire, QC was her haven and she took great care and pride in her homemaking, always cooking homemade meals from scratch — we didn’t eat a lot of meals that came out of a box. She made the best banana cake and apple pie!
Lisa overcame a very difficult childhood and was a loving mother, doing her best to give her children the upbringing she never had. She respected our choices and was never one to meddle. She was the last surviving member of her family and had fond memories of her five brothers — Gerard, Leo, Valere, Paul and Fernand.
She loved her grandchildren, always asking about them and what they were up to.
And of course she was devoted to Dad — they were best friends. They did pretty well everything together: gardening, going on walks, some travelling, relaxing with their books and even shovelling snow together when they lived in Barrhaven. Although she never talked about it, she missed him every day.
Many thanks to the compassionate care from the nurses and doctors at the Almonte General Hospital.
Cremation will take place followed by interment in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Donations in Lisa’s memory may be made to Ottawa Food Bank or Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.
