PLUMLEY, KENT HARRY ERVIN
Science '60, Law ‘63
Queen's University
December 25, 1936 - September 2, 2015
On Wednesday September 2, 2015 Kent was peacefully released from a long illness. Born Christmas Day, 1936 to the late Harry and Ruth (Neville) Plumley in Cornwall, ON, Kent is mourned by his wife, Sandra (Macdonald), his beloved daughters, Christa (Kelly Holman), Toronto and Julia (David Smailes), Cayman Islands. He was deeply loved by his darling grandchildren, Kylie, Rhys and Maeve Holman, and Imogen and Brooke Smailes. Kent was the consummate big brother of and life-long friend to Donald (Mary Cruikshank) Toronto and Myrna Watt Kingston, and their families. Kent grew up in Cornwall playing several sports, most notably football at CCVS and singing in the church choir. During a high school trip to Queen's University his imagination was forever captured after the incomparable experience of a Saturday afternoon football game at the original Richardson Stadium. The dream to play for the Golden Gaels coupled with his ambition to wear an iron ring sealed his destiny. He was a proud Chemical engineering grad of Science '60, earning the iron ring, which he proudly wore his whole life. He is forever a Gael, having been inducted into the Queen's Football Hall of Fame as a player in 2000. On September 11, 2015 he, along with his wife Sandra, will be inducted again into the hall of fame, this time as a builder. Kent earned an LLB as a member of Queen's Law '63. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1966 and went on to practice Intellectual Property Law in Ottawa, most recently at Osler LLP. During his career Kent's focus switched to high technology law and financing after becoming involved in Mitel Corporation as a lead investor and Director. Kent then moved on to become an investor and Director at Newbridge Networks. In the course of his career he was involved in numerous high tech start-up companies initially in the telecom sector. In 2000 his interest broadened to biotechnology, becoming Chairman of Genesys Capital Partners, a successful biotech investment firm. In the 1970's Kent's sense of adventure led him to discover catamaran sailing. He went on to compete across the world in national, international and world championships. He was past President of the Canadian Tornado Association and member of the International Tornado Association. One of his most meaningful accomplishments was serving on the Queen's University Board of Trustees for 3 terms. In 2001 he was honoured with the Agnes Benidickson Award presented by the Ottawa Branch of Queen's Alumni for outstanding service to Queen's. Kent thrived as a member of numerous Boards of both public and private companies and several industry associations. Heartfelt thanks to the management, staff and residents of Bridlewood Trails Retirement Residence, including Veronica, Brenda, Redden and Marinel; and to Debbie, Phil and Fred at Seniors Solution for their friendship and loving care. Kent was one of the earliest proponents to revitalize the current Richardson Stadium at Queen's Univeristy and work is currently under way to build that new stadium. The family wishes to continue Kent's dream by suggesting memorial donations to the fund or to the Plumley Family Student Bursary Awards at Queen's. A donation may be made at www.givetoqueens.ca/plumley . Kent's brain has been donated to the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at the Toronto General & Western Hospital. If desired donations may be directed to the fund by calling 416 603-6278 or visiting www.tgwhf.ca . Visitation will be held at the
Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes,
3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa
on Wednesday, September 9, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will take place at 4:30 pm on Thursday, September 10 at St. John's Anglican Church, South March, Ontario to be followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. Family, friends and former colleagues are welcome to attend a reception immediately afterwards at the Brookstreet Hotel, 525 Legget Drive, Kanata.
