Kenneth John Harwood
Peacefully, in his 96th year, on December 26, 2015, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre Ottawa. Beloved father of Chris (Elizabeth) and Sheila Young. Cherished Bampa of Gwen (Scott) and Kevin Harwood and David, Michael (Jessica) and Laura Young. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Joan (neé Melton), his parents Percy and Margaret Harwood, brother Nigel and sister Elvia Bailey. Kenneth was born in Langar, Notts, UK. He was a graduate of Ellesmere College in Shropshire. He came to Canada late in 1939 to attend Bishop’s University. Following overseas service 1941-45 RCAF (Radar-Mech.) he resumed his studies and graduated from Bishop’s University (Arts 47). He spent the post war years in Montreal then Ottawa (1958). His Federal Public Service career encompassed the Department of Labour and Statistics Canada (Labour Division). He was a past President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada. In retirement he worked as a pension consultant with the Canadian Nurses Association. Ken actively shared his love and knowledge of classical and church music with his family and friends. A deeply spiritual man, he was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church, serving in many lay capacities (both liturgical and administrative), and the Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen (Ottawa). His membership in the WWII Radar Veterans Association of Canada and participation in its conferences and activities was a great source of enjoyment and pleasure. Ken had a definitive knowledge of Canadian railroads and their history, which he shared with his family. Ken was dedicated to his wife, family and the nurture and education of his grandchildren. A Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at St. Matthias Anglican Church, 555 Parkdale Avenue on January 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation with family will take place in the Parish Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to: The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre Foundation, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, and the Anglican Foundation of Canada. Our grateful thanks to the staff at the Perley, the CCAC and the Reverend Canon John Wilker-Blakley for their loving support. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery.
