Szlama, Jozsef “Joe”
Peacefully on Monday, December 2, 2019 at the age of 93 years at Starwood Extendicare. Beloved husband of the late Margit Szlama. Predeceased by his son. Joe was born in Budapest, Hungary. Always athletic, his 5’6” stature was ideal for wrestling and he earned many honours in his youth. He and Margaret fled communism for a better life in 1957. Five years later they received their citizenships and lived their lives as proud Canadians. Joe trained as a printer at the age of 15 and after several moves and job changes he was hired by the Ottawa Citizen and spent many happy years there before retiring in 1988. Joe had a talent for the banjo and harmonica and loved to entertain at holiday dinners but his true passion was downhill skiing. He skied all over the world and eagerly looked forward to buying his season pass every fall. He was very sad when he had to give up the sport at the age of 77. He will be missed by his good friends, Agnes, Les, Mark, Carolyn and Luc.
Final good byes will be said at St. James Anglican Cemetery, Carp on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 11 am. In memory of Joe, please consider a donation to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
