Young, John Leonard, CD
December 23, 1933 – June 10, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Leonard Young on June 10, 2020 at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus. John was born in Portsmouth, England, the only son of the late Lt. (Navy) J. L. Young and Elsie Young. John passed away surrounded by the love of his life, Helen (nee Shortt) and his beloved daughters Janice (the late James) Moyes, Ottawa; Heather (Martin) Saizew, Calgary; and Patricia (Alden) Rattew, Pakenham. John is also survived by his grandchildren Michael (Kelsey) Saizew and their son Hunter, Kevin (Demi) Saizew and their son Jacob and Alexandra Saizew, all of Calgary. John came to Canada with his parents in 1948 and lived in many parts of Canada according to his father’s posting. He went to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University and it was at that time he and Helen were married. They moved to Ottawa in 1962. John had a long and active life. He was employed with the federal civil service and retired in 1993 from Public Works. He also was an officer with the 3rd Sigs and Regiment du Hull and enjoyed his service, especially the call outs. Among the many things they enjoyed together was going to London to see the plays in the West End and travelling through different parts of Europe. During the winter they both enjoyed curling and downhill Skiing-particularly at Mont Ste. Anne, Quebec. At home they continued their love of plays by attending the NAC English Theatre and the Ottawa Little Theatre. John was an avid stamp collector since boyhood and spent many enjoyable hours keeping his collection up to date. He was a man of great faith and a good and wonderful husband and father. He will be sorely missed by his family and by those who knew him. Due to COVID-19 there will only be a small private funeral service at this time.
