John Moule

June 27, 1923 — June 10, 2018

Moule, John (Ted)

1923 – 2018

Teased because he had two names, John, known to many as Ted, passed away on June 10, 2018, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Sadie, his devoted wife of 72 years, predeceased him by six months.

He is survived by daughters Sheila and Valerie (Peter), and beloved grandchildren Matt, Dan (Jill), Stephen (Diane) and Andrea (Andrew). Ted revelled in the company of his great-grandchildren Jamie, Grace, Seth and Charlie. Always the storyteller and joker, he entertained numerous nieces and nephews with his Welsh accent. He will be missed by family friend Leanne Shea and her family, and Marc Lanthier.

Eldest child to Jack and Kit (Katherine) Moule in Pontypridd, Wales, Ted is survived by siblings Maureen and John (Winnie), and predeceased by siblings Ken, Valerie, Shirley and Viv.

Growing up a stone’s throw from a coal mine, his first inclination was to become a Welsh coal miner. Luckily, his father intervened and he apprenticed as a carpenter/cabinetmaker, in which he excelled. During World War II, Ted volunteered with the Home Guard to scout in the event of attacks on Pontypridd. He enlisted in the Royal Navy as soon as he was of age and was stationed in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, as an aircraft mechanic. He met Sadie Flynn during a furlough to Montreal and they ultimately married. Ted and Sadie resided in Wales before moving their family to Canada on the RMS Aquitania. They lost all of their belongings when their first residence burned down, and Ted worked for years building homes in the Outaouais and Ottawa so that he could afford to buy and renovate a one-room schoolhouse in Silver Creek, Quebec, turning it into the family home. The family then moved to Ottawa in the 60s and he proudly worked in retail until his retirement from The Bay at Bayshore. He maintained his carpentry skills over his lifetime and lovingly made dove-tailed cedar chests for his family and lecterns for St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in Silver Creek and St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kanata. Our gratitude goes to the staff at Granite Ridge Care Home and the St. Paul’s Church community.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, July 7 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 20 Young Rd., Kanata at 1 p.m., followed by a reception. Sadie and Ted will be buried together at the Maple Grove Cemetery following the reception. Donations to The Dementia Society in Ted’s memory are appreciated.
