John H. L. Hamilton
November 13,1938 - August 18, 2018
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John H.L. Hamilton on August 18 at the age of 79.
Born in Ottawa, he attended Lisgar Collegiate Institute and Upper Canada College. He had fond memories of his time at Queen's University, where he earned his Bachelor of Commerce ('63) and Masters of Business Administration ('65). He was a Chartered Accountant who worked with Thorne, Riddell & Company. For over 25 years, he was affiliated with Algonquin College, initially as a professor and later as Dean of the School of Business. He retired as VP Finance and Administration and President of Acerra Learning.
Throughout his career he maintained a variety of business, public and charitable interests, serving as Vice-President of the Ottawa Board of Trade; Chair of the National Affairs Committee; Board
Chair of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group; Chair of Hydro Ottawa Holdings; Board Member of the Rotary Club of Ottawa, Director Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, Trustee of the Institute of Mental Health Research; and most recently as a Director on the Advisory Board of the Parkinson Research Consortium.
He was an avid sports enthusiast, from playing basketball & football to golf & skiing; and he always looked forward to a quiet afternoon on the couch watching the Blue Jays and the Sens. He was a long-time member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club and enjoyed many years on the slopes at Mont St. Marie. He loved spending time with his family and friends at the cottage on Rideau Lake.
He is deeply missed by his wife of 51 years, Jane; children John (Kristina) and Jen (Seth); grandchildren Sam, Anna, Thomas, Sloane and Ryan.
