Cherry - John Desmond
John Desmond Cherry passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital at 6:35 am on January 12th, 2015. He was 88 years old and has been the beloved husband of Marian (née Stapledon) for 58 of those years. He was a loving father to Colin and Nancy (Bruce) and the doting and cherished grandfather of Liam. On August 29th, 1926, a bonny, wee boy was born in Bishopton, County Durham in northern England. He was part of a large family and had 6 sisters (Winnie, Muriel, Lena, Jean (Joe), Cathy, Maureen) and 4 brothers (Reg, Arnold, Ken, Alan (Janet)). World War II changed many lives and saw Des joining The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) regiment. His service brought him to India, Malaysia and Singapore. After the war, he migrated to Canada. He worked at the Ottawa Paint Works that used to be in LeBreton Flats. When the company moved to Toronto, Des decided to stay in Ottawa and joined the Ottawa Carleton School Board in 1960 and retired in 1989. Des enjoyed his family, gardening, music, his dogs and was skilled at household and woodworking projects. He was particularly fond of making bird houses and feeders. We would like to thank the caring staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their compassion. Friends may attend a visitation at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd. (between Baseline Rd. and Bayshore Dr.), Nepean on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Private burial.
