Bonnar – John
John Bonnar passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on April 26, 2021. He was dearly loved by his wife of 54 years, Sharron Bonnar (nee Murray) and his 2 children, Tim Bonnar (Ottawa) and Kelly Bonnar (Potsdam, NY). The joy in his life came from the time he spent with his grandsons, Olsen, John, Kolby, Silas and Lukas. He is survived by his brothers, Meehan (Mary) and Brian (Janice) Bonnar and his sisters Joyce Boucher (Barry), Terry Phillips (Gordon), Judy McAleer, and Carol Mitchell (Guy). He will also be fondly remembered by his sister and brother-in-law (Sheila Murray and Bill Cameron), his many cousins, nieces, and nephews. John is pre-deceased by his father Theodore and his mother Peggy.
He was best known for his love of hockey and golf. He was proud of the time he spent as a playing coach with the Canadian Championship team, the Embrun Panthers. We still hear him called “Coach” and his dedication to his players was profound. When he wasn’t at the rink, he was out shooting the back 9 at the Calabogie Highlands Golf course or serving his community as a member of the Lions Club and always out and about fixing random things that sometimes didn’t even need fixing.
His family always came first and by family, we mean everyone who knew him. People could just count on him. And he absolutely adored his grandsons with whom he created so many memories that will last a lifetime – golf cart rides, chasing geese, catching frogs, boating, fishing, riding the 4-wheeler, and he never missed a hockey game, baseball game or a concert. His grandsons would say that he was the greatest grandfather they could ever ask for.
The family would welcome donations in his name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. We will be planning a celebration of life at a future date as COVID restrictions are lifted. Condolences, tributes and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com
