It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Smith on May 10, 2019, in Ottawa in her 91st year. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Bernard Gordon Smith (Oct. 24, 2014) as well as the dear mother of Janice (Graham), Eric (Abbie), Kevin (Kathryn), Jenny (Mark) and Terry Ann (Walter). She was a proud grandmother of Michael, Christopher and Andrew Payne; Rebecca and Rachel Smith; Randy, Gregory, Trevor and Victoria Smith; Michelle, Gregory, Kellylynne, Paige and Holly Galvin; Adam, Sean, Erica, Sarah and Devin Prager; great-grandmother to 14. She is predeceased by brother Rex and sister Inez. Joan was born in Seoul, Korea to the late William Bramwell Welbourn and the late Gertrude Sarah (Queenie) Welbourn, Missionaries for the Salvation Army from 1921 - 1940. Joan was raised and educated in Korea through her formative years before coming to Canada in her late teens and settling with her parents in Toronto. She was an active Salvationist, went to business school and worked for several years at General Electric as an Administrative Assistant, before meeting her true love, a fellow Salvationist, band member Bernard Smith, her husband for almost 60 years. Together, they raised their five children in the Salvation Army, all of whom became active members. Joan was an active mother and grandmother and later in her life a great-grandmother. She showed her love by giving her time to all of us. Family and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, ON. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 3 p.m. Reception to follow at Beechwood. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.
