Shirley Jean Meabry (nee Hewitt) passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 27, 2021. She was born August 21, 1923 to Annie Duffy and Richard Hewitt, was predeceased by her husband William Woodside Meabry and by her siblings Allan, Ralph, Audrey and Garry. Cherished mother to Barry, Judi (Dominic) and Scott (Lisa). Loving grandmother to Jacob, Molly, Aimee, John Ross, Liam, Matthew, Marissa, Alanna, Samantha and William. Jean was born and raised in Ottawa, the city she loved so much. She attended the High School of Commerce and went to work at Ottawa Car & Aircraft in support of the war effort, then Addressograph-Multigraph. She married William - the love of her life - in June of 1954. Together, they ran two motels along the St Lawrence Seaway in Morrisburg and Long Sault before settling back in Ottawa to raise their family. Once back in Ottawa, she worked at AB Dick and finished out her career at The Canadian Labour Congress. She called Westboro home for the rest of her life. Jean loved a good story and had many of her own including the Seaway house movers and how not a dish was broken. Her trips to the races at Watkins Glen or escapades on the Rideau River with sister Audrey in their speedboat. She always loved driving, especially her '76 Camaro (Bill would often say “Keep your foot out of the carburetor, Jean”). She took great pleasure sewing, painting, playing the organ, writing poems, and spending time with family and many friends. The highlight of her year was an annual summer trip to Bala, Ontario. She also enjoyed visiting Judi and family in far away places such as England, Belgium and Ireland as a bonus. Later in life, she made new friends at the Westboro Community Centre fitness classes, and would regularly gather with fellow retirees from the CLC. She was a grateful, resourceful and determined woman who rose to any challenge at hand. Gone but never forgotten. As a family we remain, forever inspired. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army Ottawa Grace Manor or Brain Canada Foundation.
