Jean McCarthy (née Gates)
Peacefully passed away at Ottawa General Hospital on Monday February 27, 2023, with family by her side. Born in Edmonton (North London), England on April 17, 1944.
Lovingly remembered by her sons Sean, Paul, Peter, Ian, Bruce, by her son in-law Simon, by her daughter Amanda, by her daughter’s in-law Lynda, Kristin, Rainuka, by her grandchildren Declan, Liam, Devin, and Roan. Pre-deceased by her first grandchild Dylan.
After Graduating from college in England, she boarded a boat with her husband, John McCarthy, bound for Ottawa, Canada. She loved her career as an illustrator drawing pictures for technical manuals. First settling in old Kanata for a couple of years until Sean was born. She was in love with the Ottawa Valley countryside, in particular, Carp. This village and the parish of St. James became her new home to which she vowed to never leave, raising 6 children in the church, schools, and community. Jean devoted any spare time to volunteering at Huntley Centennial, St. James Church, Historical Society, and many other community associations. With her involvement in the community, she built many deep and lasting friendships, this is in addition to several friends who journeyed from England to make Canada their home.
Services will be held Saturday March 4, 2023 at St. James Anglican Church (3774 Carp Road, Carp). Visitation from 12:00 PM to 1:00PM. Funeral service at 1:00 PM. The adjoining hall will be available for tea, coffee, and snacks after the service. Memorial donations to CHEO, Diabetes Canada or St. James Anglican Church, Carp would be appreciated by the family.
