BASSETT, Margaret Jean
(nee Brown)
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on February 13th at her home in Ottawa, Ontario. She was in her 91st year.
Jean was born in Tomahawk Alberta on June 3rd 1925 – the eldest daughter of Alberta pioneers David and Eva Brown. She is survived by her sisters Edra and Zeta and her brother Doug. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Jim and David.
In 1950 Jean married the love of her life Douglas Alexander Bassett who pre-deceased her in 1985. Jean is survived by her daughters Kathryn Ann Anderson (Hans Schwerdel), and Beverly Joyce Bassett-Peever (Tom Peever) and her son Douglas Alexander Bassett (Yoshie Bassett). Jean also has nine grand children Alison, Jennifer, David, Joshua, Matthew, Emma, Erin, Julia and Lisa and seven great grandchildren Ava, Victoria, Lily, Claira, Maeve, Aidan, and William that she loved with all her heart.
Jean was the first woman to graduate from Ryerson Institute of Technology in a technical discipline. She had a long and varied career in the Public Service. After she retired she obtained an honours degree in Fine Arts (1994) from Ottawa University. She was an artist in her own right. Her paintings are cherished by friends and family.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held Saturday March 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM at First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Ave, Ottawa Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests in memoriam donations to Westboro Community Support or to MIRA Foundation which were both close to her heart.
