Born in Sheet Harbour Nova Scotia in 1931, Janet lived her life with intelligence and fierceness, grounded by a deep love for family.
Janet trained as a registered nurse at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Soon after graduating in 1953, Janet's adventures began, taking her to Niagara Falls and Toronto, where she honed her skills as a surgical and ER nurse. She then returned to Halifax to nurse at the Halifax VG and Halifax Infirmary, where she met her husband — the tall handsome Mountie — Lyn. They were married in Halifax in 1956.
A transfer in 1957 took Lyn and Janet to Ottawa, where they spent the rest of their lives together and raised their children. Janet "retired" from nursing in 1965 to become a full-time mom.
True to her maritime roots, Janet was a quintessential storyteller. From family tales, to hair-raising nursing stories, to funny expressions and turns of phrase, she had a way of painting a vivid, visual picture that brought the people, places and experiences she loved to life.
Known by dogs everywhere as the ‘cookie-lady' Janet had a unique gift with all animals. The love was mutual – she adored all dogs and cats, and they loved her in return with an unbridled passion. We are 100% certain she has been greeted in heaven with delighted tail wags and bum wiggles from Brownie, Misty, Tucker, Sadie, Jetty and Kaya.
The youngest of three sisters, Janet enjoyed a deep and loving relationship with middle sister Abby and eldest sister Louise. While they lived across the country from each other, she and Lyn lived for the opportunity to see them, for a rare Christmas gathering, or vacation together in Hawaii.
Above all, Janet reserved her greatest love for her family. The sun, moon and stars rose and set on her children, Ellyn and Greg, and her grandchildren, Graeme and Cameron. They were her entire world. They could not have asked for a more devoted and proud mother and grandmother.
Love you forever mum/nana. We'll listen for you in the cardinal's song.
