James L. Fleck
July 30, 1927-March 5, 2019
Jim passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Saint Vincent Hospital. Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years Beverley (nee Mick). Sadly missed by his children Cheryl Slessor (Jim), Geoffrey (Dale), Kenneth (Deanna) and Christopher (Joane). Also, fondly remembered by his grandchildren Tara, Michael, Andrew, Samuel, Bryce, Sarah and his step-grandchildren Madisson and Dawson and his great grandchildren Lukas and Christian.
Born and raised in Ottawa, Jim was educated at Ashbury College. Joining the family business, the Alexander Fleck Limited, after graduation, Jim worked the shop floor learning the business on his way to co-managing the enterprise. After close to three decades with the company, three decades which saw an amalgamation with another Ottawa firm, Beach Foundry, Jim, along with his brother David, oversaw the sale of Beach Foundry in 1973 to Canadian Admiral.
Invoking his entrepreneurial spirit, again in partnership with his brother, Jim started Capcan Limited in 1974. Manufacturing furnaces, the first of which was built in the garage of his family home, the company thrived until being bought in 1980 by Intercity Gas. Jim finished his business career with Intercity Gas.
Jim believed in community service and was a long standing member, and past President, of the Rotary Club of Ottawa. During these years, Jim dedicated his time to many worthy programs sponsored by the Club, including his greatest passion, the Adventure in Citizenship Program. A program that continues to this day.
During these many years of working within the Ottawa business community and in giving back to the community he called home, Jim developed an unassailable reputation for integrity in all his dealings.
Jim was an avid golfer and sportsman throughout his life and in retirement spent many days with his sweetheart Beverley on both the local links and throughout the South.
