James Craig

August 22, 1943 — March 20, 2016

CRAIG – LCol. James Walter (Retired)

Peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on March 20, 2016, age 72, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Vancouver on August 22, 1943 he was the son of the late Frederick and Sybil Craig. He attended Lester B. Pearson High School in New Westminster and was a graduate of the University of British Columbia.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years Laurie Craig, daughters Susan McLennan and Sarah Craig, granddaughters Emma and Tessa McLennan and son-in-laws Gordon McLennan and Erik Nortman.

Jim joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp in 1965 and was a transportation and logistics transportation officer. He received the Canadian Decoration for loyal service and Canadian medals for military service in Vietnam, Israel, Germany and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for meritorious service with the United States forces during the Gulf War. And a successful thirty-five year military career with service in 22 countries resulted in his receiving the Canadian Order of Military Merit.

Always an athlete, Jim played football in high school and held the record for the high school mile in the City of Vancouver for years. He loved to ski, both downhill and Nordic, and he completed 14 marathons in at least five countries. As recorded in his personal journals Jim was approximately 2000km short of running his way completely around the world.

In his retirement years, Jim was the Manager of the Carp Farmers Market. He enjoyed organizing and working with the vendors and was especially proud of the success of the Garlic Festival. He also traveled extensively with his wife Laurie and enjoyed planning these getaways almost as much as actually doing them.

Many thanks to Dr. Chris Morash and Dr. Susan Dawson for their exceptional support. And a very special thank you to the Saint Elizabeth Palliative Care nurses, Susann and Jodi, for their kindness and the extraordinary care they provided both to Jim and his family.
